THE BAKEHOUSE IS A FACILITY IN WYNWOOD THAT PROVIDES STUDIO SPACES FOR ARTISTS TO WORK. THEY WISHED TO EXPAND THEIR FACILITY TO CREATE “LIVE, LIVE-WORK, AND WORK SPACES” FOR EACH OF THE ARTISTS. IN ORDER TO PRESERVE THE OPEN COURTYARD SPACE ON THE SITE, A THICK WALL THAT COULD BE AN INHABITED FOR HOUSING AND OTHER SPECIFIED PROGRAM WAS CHOSEN TO FACILITATE THE PROJECT. AS PRECIDENT STUDY FOR THIS PROJECT WAS THE “SIGNAL BOX” BY HERZOG AND DEMURON WAS CHOSEN FOR THE DUMB BOX AND COMPLEX SKIN TYPOLOGY. WITH INSPIRATION FROM THE PRECIDENT, ALL OF THE SPACES NEEDED WERE MASSED OUT, IN AREAS THAT WERE CHOSEN BASED ON PRIVATE AND PUBLIC LOCATIONS, AND WRAPED IT IN A SKIN THAT BENDS AND DEFORMS TO CREATE OPENINGS FOR DOORS AND WINDOWS. THIS CREATES A CONTRAST BETWEEN A DUMB BOX AND COMPLEX SKIN LANGUAGE. IN THE COURTYARD THE LANDSCAPE USED THE SAME LANGUAGE AS THE COMPLEX SKIN TO CREATE VARIOUS SEATING AREAS AND AMPHITHEATER SPACES.
